Men are three times more likely to commit financial crimes, but women get the punishment
Men are multiple times bound to perpetrate monetary violations, yet ladies get the discipline Men are multiple times bound to perpetrate monetary violations, yet ladies get the discipline As the 2008 monetary emergency showed us, singular brokers are more averse to address the cost with regards to bad behavior. Be that as it may, another Stigler Center paper found that when people do get rebuffed, they're unquestionably bound to be women. When Harry Fired Sally: The Double Standard in Punishing Misconduct found that male money related guides are multiple times as prone to participate in unfortunate behavior, are twice as liable to be recurrent guilty parties, however ladies are undeniably bound to be rebuffed for these violations and lose their jobs -particularly when their managers are men.Women are more averse to do the wrongdoing, bound to pay the timeWe definitely realize that ladies are more averse to make as much as men when they work in the budgetary area. The Wall Street Journal found that female monetary counsels made middle earnings of $58,528 contrasted with their male counterpart's $91,814.This new investigation demonstrates that sexual orientation segregat ion occurs with unfortunate behavior too.Looking at information on the evaluated 1.2 million individuals who have enlisted as money related guides, the researchers found that female advisers are half bound to be fired following offense and 30% more averse to get another account line of work after a wrongdoing occurrence. Analysts said that it didn't make a difference to what extent the ladies had been at the firm, what number of benefits they had figured out how to draw in for their firm, or how notable they were in their industry; what made a difference when it came to discipline was whether they were a woman. When you jumble up, you need a support at the top to vouch for youThe study found that it's the organizations, not clients or controllers, who are driving the charge for discipline - which gives us why we as a whole need supports at the table who can vouch for us when we fail.Having a system of companions in the workplace to help you won't help all things considered. Office cl ans can be a wellspring of help for the individuals who are in them, yet when you are kept separate from them, they can prompt sentiments of ostracism.Firms with equivalent sexual orientation portrayal of administrators trained male and female counsels at comparative rates. Be that as it may, firms with more guys in the top positions were bound to be unforgiving towards ladies - despite the fact that they let the past stay in the past with men. Firms who had no ladies at the possession level were 42% bound to be terminated than men in a similar firm after misconduct. One proposed solution to this foundational segregation, the analysts finished up, is to get more ladies in these top positions: Chiefs in associations can legitimately influence strategies prompting separation⦠individuals from the separated gathering, i.e., ladies, are bound to perceive separation and less inclined to help prejudicial practices.Female budgetary counsels are far more averse to swindle the framework, ho wever are being rebuffed more when they do destroy. Then, male monetary consultants keep getting all the more fresh opportunities. It's quite reasonable for ladies to be getting them too. Fairness in the working environment comes not simply on how you treat representatives when they succeed, yet in addition how when they fall flat.

Chase After Your Goals, Seriously.
Pursue Your Goals, Seriously. Pursue Your Goals, Seriously. This is a visitor post by Cristina Grimaldi for Student Stories. Theres a colossal distinction between saying you need to be fruitful, and really finding a way to make it happen. I discovered that exercise when I finished my first entry level position during my sophomore year of school. It was then that it at long last enrolled with me exactly how basic experience is, particularly before you enter the frightening spot everybody calls this present reality. At the point when I did that first entry level position, I began to understand a few things. I saw what number of others are likewise making ventures towards their objectives, the significance of experience on a list of qualifications, and that most things will never simply be given to you. You can be the kind of individual that trusts that a business will get in touch with you, which is improbable, or you can be the individual to go thumping on each entryway with no disgrace. In the event that you see a temporary job opening, apply. In the event that you get denied a position, apply to 15 more. Towards the finish of my sophomore year I applied for a temporary job that I thought I truly needed, however I wound up not getting it because of absence of experience. When I got off the telephone with the HR administrator who had disclosed to me they were giving the situation to another person, I got on the web and applied to each and every temporary job that intrigued me. I was offered one that so far has given me the best information about Public Relations, which additionally demonstrates that on the off chance that one entryway shuts, a superior one will open. Be that as it may, never surrender when you are denied a position in light of the fact that at last, you will require the experience. The greater quality work you have on your list of qualifications, the more probable you will get recruited directly out of school. I am likewise extremely dynamic on proficient online life destinations. I associate with and contact individuals who are in my field, and approach them for exhortation or significantly offer to be some assistance on any tasks or occasions. I think that its urgent to use internet based life since it is an incredible method to coordinate with individuals who you may require help from sometime in the not too distant future. You will be astonished with regards to how far creation associations can get you. The exact opposite thing I need to make reference to is that there is consistently an approach to be engaged with work. Im going out traveling for about a month and a half toward the finish of the late spring, however I despite everything needed to get a late spring entry level position some way or another. I reached a lady that I met through a dear companion, and she is the VP of a firm in Philadelphia. I inquired as to whether I could understudy with her for two months rather than an entire summer, yet with longer work days, and she said yes. So regardless of what the circumstance is, there is consistently an approach to get what you need as long as you are happy to put yourself out there. So at the danger of sounding totally antique, Im going to leave you with this: pursue your objectives and dont ever let somebody saying no prevent you from pushing ahead. About the Author: My name is Cristina Grimaldi and I'm a lesser at Temple University. I was conceived in Naples, Italy and despite the fact that I moved to America at a youthful age, Italy will consistently be in my heart. My family likewise has my heart. I want to succeed and regardless of what knocks may come my direction, I will consistently push forward.

More than half of The Worlds Greatest Leaders are women
The greater part of 'The World's Greatest Leaders' are ladies The greater part of 'The World's Greatest Leaders' are ladies Fortune Magazine discharged its rundown of The World's 50 Greatest Leaders today and more than half of them are ladies - 26, to be exact. The distribution positioned a various arrangement of ladies as influence players in ventures like government, media, diversion and philanthropy.Four women made it to the main 10: Melinda Gates, co-seat of the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, came in at #4, Film Director and Screenwriter Ava DuVernay at #6, Tsai Ing-Wen, the principal female (and ebb and flow) leader of Taiwan, at #8 and Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany, balanced #10.Author Geoff Colvin brought up three exercises on authority we can gain from everybody on the rundown this year. They recognize reality and offer expectation, unite devotees genuinely, and assemble spans, Colvin wrote. You don't need to be renowned to be a leaderYou may be thinking, admirably, that is extraordinary and all, yet shouldn't something be said about the persevering ladies (and men) who I work with everyday?F ortune accentuated that we shouldn't disregard the incredible pioneers who don't get enormous magazine spreads.Remember as you examine our rundown that we assess every pioneer inside their own field of attempt. Somebody driving a little association viably may rank above somebody undeniably progressively well known pushing worldwide issues⦠.The fact of the matter is that incredible pioneers can be anyplace in charge of a monster company, running a rustic school, or in a confined office applying impact through sheer close to home vitality, Colvin wrote.Women in authority positions are still rareWhile the greater part of the individuals on The World's 50 Greatest Leaders list were ladies, obviously ladies who are different in each feeling of the word are underrepresented in proficient jobs.Nonprofit association Catalyst named all the ladies who are as of now CEOs at SP 500 organizations, as indicated by the January 2017 SP 500 rundown distributed by Dow Jones. They found that ladies just hold 29 CEO positions at those organizations an insignificant 5.8% of CEOs, a little extent contrasted with ladies as generally a large portion of the number of inhabitants in America. The error has persuaded administrators including Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook, and Sallie Krawcheck, once of Bank of America, to compose books and give discourses about what ladies can do to assist their situations in corporate America. Sandberg's TED chat on why we have too not many ladies pioneers is a famous one. Women of shading frequently hold even far less initiative positions.Hispanic ladies make up 6.2% of the private area workforce, however just 1.3% of private division senior-level administrators, as indicated by an outline in a report by the American Association of University Women, which used 2014 information from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. A similar diagram showed that Black ladies make up 7.9% of the private segment workforce, however just 1.5% of private divi sion senior-level executives. The incongruity? Numerous examinations show that organizations with more ladies on their sheets and more ladies on their groups perform well monetarily and gain better incomes and more grounded benefits.

The Top 10 Reasons Why You Didnt Get the Job
The Top 10 Reasons Why You Didnt Get the Job The Top 10 Reasons Why You Didnt Get the Job Have you at any point battled with a quest for new employment and asked: Why cant I find a new line of work? Sometimes its simply misfortune, yet frequently there is something youre fouling up in your pursuit of employment. Here are 10 reasons why the enrollment specialist is dismissing you. 1. Youre Underqualified You dont need to have 100 percent of the aptitudes and capabilities recorded on a set of working responsibilities, yet you do need to have a high rate. Expect to go after positions where you fit in any event 90 percent of the capabilities. (That number drops for profoundly specific jobs.) If the set of working responsibilities requests somebody with three-five years of experience, your 2.5 long stretches of experience may qualify you for the activity if youre solid in the entirety of different regions. A half year of experience isnt going to cut it. 2. Youre Overqualified It can appear to be strange that businesses would dismiss you for having an excessive amount of understanding or such a large number of degrees. Be that as it may, recall that enrollment specialists and recruiting supervisors are searching for individuals who will flourish in the activity they have available. If you have a MBA and are going after an inbound call place position, individuals will accept that youll secure the position exhausting, so they wont employ you. On the off chance that you figure you would appreciate an occupation for which youre overqualified, ensure you recognize this in your introductory letter and clarify why youre going after this job. 3. Youre Focused on One or Two Companies Your fantasy work is at the organization over the road, so you apply for everything that surfaces there. Its fine to go after a couple of jobs at a similar organization, yet individuals some of the time need an occupation at a specific spot so gravely that they apply for 10, 20, or significantly more positions. When your name springs up that as often as possible, youre really bringing down your odds of finding a new line of work. Organizations need to enlist individuals that need a particular activity. On the off chance that you go after an excessive number of jobs, they expect that you simply need any activity and wont essentially be cheerful in the event that they employ you. 4. Your Resume Is Sloppy All things considered, a grammatical mistake doesnt have a gigantic effect. In your resume? A mistake can comprise the distinction between whether you get a meeting or find your application naturally dismissed. Never present a resume that you havent go through a spell checker and a punctuation checker. Always ensure that your resume was surveyed by a human with a decent order of sentence structure rules. Your arranging is additionally significant. Selection representatives dont need to see extravagant resumes, they need to see continues that are anything but difficult to peruse. 5. Your Cover Letter Stinks (or Is Missing) Only one out of every odd activity posting requests an introductory letter, yet on the off chance that it does, and you dont incorporate it, youll miss out at work. On the off chance that it doesnt determine, incorporate an introductory letter in any case. Ensure that your introductory letter doesnt just re-hash the data in your resume-that is a misuse of the businesses time.Your introductory letter should concentrate on why you are an incredible fit for the position. It should take the businesses expressed needs and match them to your certifications. Keep in mind, dont guarantee that you are the best individual for the position-you dont realize that and it makes you look absurd. 6. You Cant Explain Why You Were Fired Bunches of individuals lose their positions some through no deficiency of their own and some since they accomplished something moronic. Despite the explanation youre jobless, youll need to clarify what occurred and why (in the event that it was something you did) it wont happen once more. Its hard enough to get employed when youre jobless, however in the event that you just censure your previous supervisor for being a twitch, organizations wont need to take a risk on you. 7. You Have an Unstable Job History In the event that youre an understudy or an ongoing graduate, its alright to have numerous transient entry level positions and summer occupations. Something else? You should work at each specific employment for in any event year and a half, and ideally three or four years. On the off chance that your last employment was for 14 months, you better plan to remain at the following one for in any event three years. Something else, your record tells enrollment specialists that you wont stay sufficiently long to make preparing you worth the expense and time. 8. Youre Trying to Change Careers Bunches of individuals effectively change professions, yet it isnt simple. On the off chance that youre attempting to change vocation ways ensure that your resume and your introductory letter detail why youre changing professions and why youre qualified for the new profession way. Bosses wont make the association without your assistance. 9. You Have Unrealistic Salary Expectations Heaps of organizations expect you to list your focused on compensation on your employment form, alongside your pay history. On the off chance that youre going after positions that pay $30,000 per year, however youve recorded your objective compensation as $45,000, the business will dismiss you right away. Nobody needs to sit around idly talking with you when they realize you wont need to take the activity at the accessible salary.Additionally, despite the fact that you are eager to take the correct activity at $30,000, if your last compensation was $45,000, the selection representative will accept you wont need to accept a major decrease in salary. (Massachusetts just passed enactment disallowing organizations from getting some information about your pay history, so this is not, at this point an issue in MA. Watch for extra states to stick to this same pattern.) 10. Youre Annoying Going after a position can instigate tension, and your application or meeting is essential to you, so you are enticed to call more than once and catch up when you dont get notification from the business. Selection representatives and employing chiefs dont have the opportunity to address each candidate, and they particularly dont have the opportunity to converse with each candidate various times. Its alright to catch up after youve had a meeting, however its not alright to catch up different occasions except if they explicitly request that you get back to. It can kill the imminent boss for sure. On the off chance that youre battling to get a new line of work, investigate this rundown and check whether you can dispense with a couple of these issues to build your odds of occupation looking through progress. - Suzanne Lucas is an independent essayist who went through 10 years in corporate HR, where she employed, terminated, dealt with the numbers, and twofold checked with the legal counselors.

4 biggest challenges facing business leaders today
4 biggest challenges facing business leaders today When it comes to successful leadership, attributes like vision, communication, integrity, and curiosity never go out of style. Today, executives also must be able to build strong teams in the face of recruiting and retention challenges, keep up with the latest technology, and demonstrate strong business acumen. Those at the helm of their organizations need these skills, among others, to navigate the business environment, which recent research suggests is increasingly difficult to do. In a Robert Half Management Resources survey, 66 percent of chief financial officers (CFOs) said itâs more challenging to be a company leader today than it was five years ago. âEmerging trends, from the accelerated pace of change and disruptive innovations to dispersed workforces and regulatory compliance demands, have intensified the pressures facing company leaders,â said Paul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half. âTodayâs leaders must be proficient in their chosen field, but also current on big-picture issues facing their industries and organizations.â The good news? Employees are on managementâs side; in the survey, 87 percent of workers said they are confident in their company leaders. Professionals understand how challenging managing a department or company can be and respect the work of their supervisors,â McDonald said. Here are some of the top challenges facing business executives today and some tips to help leaders meet those demands head-on: 1. The need for wider-ranging knowledge Not too long ago, many company executives operated in silos: They were the experts in their division, but they didnât often get involved in the work of other departments. Today, however, leaders must take a broader organizational view. For example, many CFOs have seen their responsibilities extend beyond financeinto human resources, information technology, and operations. Fostering strong relationships with coworkers outside your department can be invaluable when it comes to learning about other areas of the firm; successful leaders make sure they participate in interdepartmental committees and projects. Holding high-level management positions in professional organizations can also help executives get a broader perspective of typical organizational structures and procedures. 2. The demand for skilled talent Because in-demand professionals have more opportunities today, itâs harder to recruit and retain top performers. In addition, managers frequently must oversee staff in several locations, which makes it even more challenging to motivate employees. This is where successful leaders tap into their strong communication skills, clearly explaining to each employee his or her career path and role in the companyâs mission, then supporting employees as they build their leadership skills and prepare for greater responsibilities. Savvy leaders also seek feedback on their communication style from mentors, fellow managers, and even staff, and follow through on the best suggestions. 3. Information overload Managers now have access to extensive databases filled with information that can greatly enhance their decision-making, but the amount of data theyâre presented with on a daily basis can be overwhelming. The strongest leaders know how to extract the most valuable information and transform it into strategic guidance â" and how to bring in highly skilled business analysts who can help them do so. 4. Change â" and more change Once, in the not-so-distant past, firms understood at least the basics of their competitorsâ business models, because most companies operated in a similar way. Today, however, firms are introducing new business models all the time. Whatâs more, technology seems to be changing every minute. Thatâs why itâs crucial for managers to stay on top of industry trends and remain open and adaptable to change. Successful leaders regularly read the top industry blogs, subscribe to newsletters, follow industry leaders on Twitter, and join relevant groups on LinkedIn. Keeping up to date with technology trends can require training; itâs a good idea for executives to take external courses and participate in in-house professional development programs. Simply put, itâs clear that todayâs business environment is constantly evolving, and executives face new pressures every day. To help their firms remain competitive, managers need to invest time and effort into improving and refining their leadership skills. But one thing remains consistent: Leaders canât achieve their goals without building a talented, engaged team. As McDonald says: âSuccessful executives engage their employees, help them build their leadership skills, and work to grow the business together.â

Candidate interview question, the critical follow up most candidates miss
Candidate interview question, the critical follow up most candidates miss This interviewer is thinking, He had the job until he asked me these candidate interview questions. Todays post explains how candidates can have a great interview. The hiring manager is thinking this candidate is the one. Then, in the last 10 minutes, the candidate loses the job because of the candidate interview questions they asked. Unfortunately, candidates dont realize they blew it. In 99.9% of job interviews, the format follows something close to the following: A few minutes of chit-chat and small talk Interviewer explains the agenda for the interview The interviewer asks the candidate interview questions The candidate uses the last few minutes to ask candidate interview questions The above format is pretty standard. And we have all see the lists of interview questions that a candidate should ask the interviewer. I have a slightly different attitude towards candidate interview questions and I blogged about it here. Check it out to read the specific questions the candidate should ask and more importantly why these candidate questions are so effective. Below is a list of the typical questions a candidate will ask in a job interview: What does success look like in the first 30 days? When you consider a candidate, what do you look for in an Acme Publishing employee? What is your management style? Are there common traits that successful Acme Publishing employees share? What is the most challenging part of the job? I am sure you are working on challenging problems. What keeps you up at night? For the record, I donât care for any of the above candidate interview questions and think they set a candidate up for failure in an interview. You can read more about why I believe this (It might be the 1000âs of interviews I have conducted) in the above-linked blog post. I talk specifically about why number 5 and 6 are doomsday questions. Kiss of death I can live with the first 4 questions listed above and those similar in tone. But too many candidates just ask their candidate interview question, listen to the answer and then move onto the next question. And this is the kiss of death. So, here is a typical interaction on the first two questions: C: What does success look like in the first 30 days? HRN: Good question. Success is pretty easily definable. We have a set onboarding and training program with milestones that need to be hit. The training is both in person, and online. Making it through these in person and online training will determine success. And then the kiss of death. Here is the Candidates response: C: OK, great. Glad to hear you have a training program. What do you look for in an Acme Publishing Employee? And when I hear the second question, the candidate lost me. If we are going to ask a question, we need to respond to the answer that qualifies us for the position. Just moving on to the next question is a wasted opportunity. A swing and a whiff. Actually, we didnt even swing. Here is another way the candidate could respond: C: OK, Great. Glad to hear you have a training program in place. The last company I worked had a pretty good program for the first 2 weeks and I created the training program for week 3 and 4. My manager was really impressed with what I learned during the first 2 weeks and explained that I had scored in the top 10% of new trainees. I was a little slow to start, so I ended up taking some of the work home to study after work. I believe this is what put me over the edge. Scene 2, Candidate interview question C: What is the common trait that successful Acme Publishing employees share? HRN: Good question. I think that one common trait that successful employees share is they have a positive attitude. Anything can be accomplished. No one here at Acme is going to say âI canât do thatâ or âWe canât do thatâ. If we can put a man on the moon, we can release some software. And then the kiss of death. Here is the Candidates response: C: That is cool. I like that attitude. OK, What is the most challenging part of the job? And we just missed another opportunity. If we are going to ask a candidate interview question, we need to respond and reinforce our qualifications. Here is another way the candidate could respond: C: That is cool. I share that same attitude. I have a saying. Are you an American or an Americanât. I absolutely believe that anything is possible. At my last job, I was given what some people thought was an impossible task. I was supposed to build 75 widgets and most people didnât think it could be done. I knew it could be done, it was just a matter of breaking down what it would take to build 75 and establishing expectations. How long would it take to build these widgets and what would be the cost? We can build them sooner than later but it will probably take more resources. But it can be done. Just acknowledging the answer isnât enough. We are being given a softball to set ourselves up with success. The way to do this is by providing an example of our prior work that is related to the interviewers answer. Requisite dating example If we ask our date âWhat is your favorite color?â and they say blue, we donât just move on to the next question and ask them what their favorite food is. We say something like âMe too! Have you seen the Blue Man Group? I cant believe they found so much blue makeup. I saw it last year in Vegas and they were amazing.â If we are trying to be sarcastic and our date is a fashionista, we show quip with, What you donât know is that sweater is not just blue, itâs not turquoise. Itâs not lapis. Itâs actually cerulean. And youâre also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent⦠wasnât it who showed cerulean military jackets? A quote from one of my favorite HR movies, The Devil wear Prada. The point We are trying to build a connection and show we have something in common with that job description. We are trying to build a connection with our date and we do this by finding something in common or with an attempt at humor. (I am an interview expert, not a dating expert) If you are going to ask a candidate interview question, provide a response. In the meantime, check out the questions I do like candidates to ask and why linked above. See you at the after party, HRNasty nasty: an unreal maneuver of incredible technique, something that is ridiculously good, tricky and manipulative but with a result that canât help but be admired, a phrase used to describe someone who is good at something. âHe has a nasty forkball. If you want to ditch the corporate ladder and take the elevator, subscribe to the weekly updates here. Hannah feeling idiotic: Because they dont realize what they dont know, however I surmise that doesnt make them languid, yet maybe ignorant (AHA second for me, right?) I am not proposing that we dont discuss or examine sentiments or perspectives, that is significant, however maybe not suitable to the discussion in which we are mentioning exhortation.

Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom The Self-Employment Surge and How Professionals Can Best Prepare
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom The Self-Employment Surge and How Professionals Can Best Prepare One in two American workers are projected to be self-employed by 2020, according to MBO Partners. While the shifting economy has surely pushed some people into independent work, many have chosen it. Career goals for contemporary professionals are changing and given how quickly this trend is taking hold in the United States, todayâs employees who aspire to be tomorrowâs contract workers need to prepare now to navigate this changing landscape. To help professionals effectively transition to contract work, the Career Advisory Board, established by DeVry University, worked with MBO Partners, Inc., a provider of back office services for self-employed professionals, to conduct a new study, The Future of Work: Preparing for Independence, which examined the attributes and skills of those who are gainfully self-employed to help aspiring contractors get and stay ahead in this ever-changing work environment. According to the study, professionals are choosing self-employment in order to control the type of work assignments they pursue (67 percent), to have a greater sense of flexibility and work-life balance (64 percent), and to follow a passion (59 percent). âWhile they are young, millennials should be proactive in taking advantage of intrapreneurship and training opportunities, as well as acquiring transferable skills like project management, budgeting, sales, and marketing, in an established organization,â I said in my function as Career Advisory Board member. âThis will be the foundation of a viable contract career in the future.â Based on the research findings, we at the Career Advisory Board recommend the following strategies to help professionals excel in independent employment: Take off the blinders: Being your own boss may sound enticing, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Survey respondents said that in addition to having solid expertise in a particular field, successful contract workers must be self-starters who have the ability to cope with uncertainty, including an unpredictable income stream. Many contactors work remotely, have multiple clients to report to, and have to juggle multiple projects at once. Assess your strengths and weakness before jumping into contract work, make sure you have an organized action plan to help you start off on the right foot, and always keep an open mind and be able to adapt quickly. In-person networking still trumps social media: The survey pool reported that while social media is important for contractorsâ branding and reputation, it often does not generate income. In fact, just 6 percent said social media outreach led to paid project work. Therefore, create strong profiles on sites like LinkedIn and Google+, but refrain from spending too much time on these networks and make sure you still build in face time. Seek in-person meetings, attend events and workshops, and be visible to your future clients beyond your social media accounts. Start small and look local: Although technological advances allow many self-employed professionals to offer their services globally, the majority of the respondents still obtain most of their work assignments from within their immediate metropolitan area. While itâs a good long-term goal to think about how you might leverage a larger and more diverse pool of potential clients, aspiring contractors should first embark on being visible in their local communities. It is also a good rule of thumb to start small with only one or two clients until you master the craft of contract work. âAs independence is becoming more desired in todayâs economy, professionals need to stand out by building strong networks in their communities and being visible to local employers that use contract work,â says Gene Zaino, president and CEO, MBO Partners. âUse your time wisely â" stay focused on your core, billable expertise and find ways to outsource other non-essential functions.â For additional career advice and to view The Future of Work: Preparing for Independence executive summary, visit: www.careeradvisoryboard.org. Summer is a time when job dissatisfaction tends to run rampant. The sun is shining, the beach is beckoning, and the last thing you want to do is toil away at a job that doesnât inspire you. When it comes to the topic of finding oneâs passion, Curt Rosengren is the man with the plan. Heâs been blogging on this issue longer than anyone else I know, and hereâs what he had to say most recently on Wild About Work: âFar too often when peopleâscareers start to get a little stale, theydo one of two things. They either go into âgrit your teeth and suck it upâ mode (after all, work IS a four-letter word, right?), or they do a swan dive out of the frying pan into the fire by making a knee-jerk job change, hoping they can leave that boredom and frustration behind.â You probably realize by now that I do not advocate the swan dive approach, so I asked Curt for some recommendations for how you can re-energize your work without making any drastic and risky moves. Take the cumulative view Understand that the goal isnât to make one broadly sweeping change that will make everything better. The goal is to juice up your job cumulatively, benefiting from the sum totaleffect of a lot of smaller changes. Do an energy audit Take a look at your job and say: âWhat gives me energy here? What do I enjoy?â and âWhat drains my energy here? What do I dislike?â The more detailed your understanding of whatâs actually happening, the more potential you have to make choices and changes that will energize your work. Identify your energizers What are the underlying themes that tend to be present when youâre happiest at work? Put another way, why do you love what you love? When you feel most in your groove, what is it about what youâre doing that feels so energizing? Consider some incremental changes Is there anything that energizes you that you could do more of? Is there anything that drains you that you could do less of? Youâre not going to turn a toad into a unicorn, but if you can even improve things by 10 percent, thatâs a good start. - See more at: http://quickbase.intuit.com/blog/2014/06/23/9-ways-to-start-liking-your-job-this-summer/#sthash.teS9w4F4.dpuf

Languages of Appreciation Acts of Service
Languages of Appreciation Acts of Service Saying âThanks for doing a great jobâ is easy; sometimes itâs too easy. For some workers, demonstrating that you care is about pitching in to help. You can usually spot these people, because theyâll frequently be found pitching in to help others. Gary Chapman and Paul White are the authors of The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace. Their book discusses why appreciation is one of the most important elements of employee motivation and satisfaction. That sounds elementary, and perhaps it is. Everyone, after all, wants workers to feel appreciated. The art is in figuring out how to make an individual feel it; the same kind of appreciation can have very different effects on different people. Over the next few posts, weâll discuss the five âlanguagesâ of appreciation that Chapman and White examine. Theyâre based on the Five Love Languages that Dr. Chapman developed as a marriage counseling tool. The five languages are: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In the workplace, Dr. Chapman and Mr. White take these concepts and apply them to office relationships. When acts of service are the language of appreciation that you value, you show others how much you care by doing things. I understand this language well; itâs the language I use in my personal and professional relationships. When I borrow my husbandâs car for the day, I fill it up with gas and get it washed. When I see a staff member struggling with a task, I pitch in. I usually donât just offer to pitch in â" I grab a pile of paper and start sorting. (Itâs not called acts of lip service, after all.) Itâs not always easy to perform acts of service, especially if youâre the boss. Many workers will not accept your help. Maybe they think youâre incompetent (it could happen) but more likely, they feel funny about having you do something nice for them or do their work â" it seems to upset the natural order of things. I experienced this firsthand a few years ago. I had hired a new assistant who was expected to start on Monday. On Friday, I started to clean the desk sheâd be using and stock it with supplies. No fewer than three staff members stopped me â" they literally took the dust cloth out of my hands and finished the job for me. It took me a while to figure out why I felt so strange about the incident. Now I recognize that I was cheated out of my preferred way to show the new assistant how grateful I was for her help â" by performing an act of service. You donât always need to pitch in and help with a task ; you can perform acts of service in other ways. Bring in food or coffee for a team that is working late; offer to help reach an item on a high shelf for a short teammate. But there are some rules that Chapman and White suggest you follow to be effective at acts of service. First, make sure your own work is under control before offering to help others. If you miss a deadline, your boss wonât care if you helped the whole team. Youâre responsible for your own work first and foremost. The authors suggest that you do ask first before pitching in â" and that you ask how the person wants the work done. If you do it wrong (or not to their standards) you may cause more harm than good â" they wonât be happy if they have to work late to repair all your âhelp.â And for goodness sake, always finish what you start. The only thing worse than not being willing to pitch in is to take an assignment and then not do it. You can cause more stress, ruin relationships and damage your own reputation. If acts of service are not your strong suit, look for another language to express your appreciation.

How to Upgrade Your Resume, Part 5 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
How to Upgrade Your Resume, Part 5 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Would you like a resume that helps you advance your career by appealing to recruiters and hiring managers? As an executive career coach who sees hundreds and writes many resumes each month, I can tell you that less than 90% of the resumes out there are ineffective. Could yours be part of the 90%? In this series of posts, I want to help ensure you to have a top 10% resume that is optimized for HUMAN readers. In Part 1, we reviewed the importance of your resume passing the â15-Second Skim Testâ and examined ideas to help you avoid being instantly rejected by recruiters and others. In Part 2, we began the process of walking through the typical professional or executive resume from top to bottom and discussed the first page header and (optional) objective. In Part 3, we discussed various information groupings that people locate in advance of their work history, such as those labeled Summary, Objective, Profile, or Qualifications. In Part 4, we considered improvements for your reverse chronological work history. In this, Part 5, letâs look at the section that concludes most professional and executive resumes⦠the one that identifies your educational accomplishments (and possibly some additional related information). The Education Section of Your Resume Lets start by considering where the education section should be located within your resume. If you have a college degree and little or no paid work experience, it is customary to place your educational information near the beginning of your resume because your education is your most notable qualification. For most others, though, this section will be found following the work history because the work history accomplishments tend to be more important than your academics. Within the education section, start with your most recent higher education degree and work backwards to your oldest one. Omit your high school education unless you have no higher education degree. There are many ways to organize each entry. Here is a suggestion: M.B.A. (Finance) Bobâs University Podunk, Arkansas 2006 Possible Additions to Your Resumeâs Education Section After listing your higher education degrees, you may want to consider including additional formal or informal education you have completed⦠especially if it is related to the types of jobs you desire. Here are two examples of such entries, the first being a formal higher education program and the second being a corporate in-house training program: Executive Leadership Seminar (1 week) Emory University Atlanta, GA 2009 IBM Leadership Program (4 weeks) IBM Learning Center Westchester, NY 2011 Additional education-related information such as licenses and certifications can be added when reasonable, either in this section or within another section that is appropriately titled: C.P.A. License (active) State of Georgia 2002 Present Series 6 Securities License (active) FINRA 2005 Present CMC â" Certified Management Consultant Institute of Mgmt. Consultants 2008 Present If you have read this and the previous four installments of this series and applied my suggestions, you should have a resume that is markedly better than your competitorâs. But, before you stop, here are a few final considerations: Run a spell checker and verify there are no misspellings. One notable misspelled word can hurt you! Read your entire resume from top to bottom, very slowly, looking for grammatical errors or incorrect use of words that are spelled correctly. Examine the formatting consistency of your overall documents⦠page margins, indentations, line spacing, font sizes, capitalization, bolding, underlining, italics, bullets, etc. Readers spot these errors and they are detraction. Lastly, stand back from the page and look at the overall esthetics. Is the smallest font large enough to be easily read? Does the page look well organized? Is there enough white space to make it look inviting rather dense and intimidating? Are YOU happy with the way it looks? At this point, your resume should be of higher quality than 90% of your job competitors. Readers will appreciate the finished product you provide them and you will have a higher chance of gaining their attention. For additional tips, check out Chapter 6 in my job search book Fast Track Your Job Search (and Career!).
