4 words to remove from your resume

4 words to remove from your resume 4 words to remove from your resume References available upon request.Do you have this line on the bottom of your resume? If you do, go delete it.Believe me, no one is concerned that you might refuse to provide references upon request. Its assumed that you will. Its like saying phone calls returned upon request. You have that line there because at some point long ago you learned that it was the thing to do. But its 100% unnecessary, its a tiny bit dated in feel, and its taking up valuable space that you could use for something with more of an impact. Go take it out Itll be liberating, like cutting those scary PENALTY OF LAW tags off your mattress.

How to Be a Boss A Manifesto for Women from Bossed Up

How to Be a Boss A Manifesto for Women from Bossed UpHow to Be a Boss A Manifesto for Women from Bossed UpWhether youre applying for an entry-level job or a management position, its time for female job seekers to start acting like a boss But if youre having a hard time even imaging what it would even be like to be a boss, these tips from Bossed Upcan get you thinking and acting like the boss babe you already are- and get the job that you want. Here are five tips from Bossed Up on how to be a bossForgive yourself. Its easy to beat yourself up for mistakes that you might have made during your job search. Maybe you forgot to follow up after an interview, or nerves got the best of you and you forgot your interviewers name.Whatever your mistake might have been, dont let it define you- and definitely dont take it with you into future job interviews. Youre human, and as such, youre bound to make mistakes. Just try elend to repeat the same ones, and dust yourself off and pick yourself up when you do.Dont fight failure.Nobody wants to be unsuccessful, but failure can be a good thing on your job search journey. After all, failures can help you avoid whats not meant for you, and redirect you towards the path youre truly meant to be on.So the next time youre rejected for a job or an employer doesnt respond back after you submit your job application, just think that the job wasnt meant for you- and theres something better waiting for you instead.Prioritize your happiness. The overall happiness you feel during your job search can largely be affected by how long it actually takes to get hired. Even if you start your job search excited by the prospect of a new position, if weeks (and months) drag on without a solid job offer, it can be, well, depressing. Thats why you need to make your happiness one of your main concerns.Take the time to do things that will help take the edge off of your job search, whether its meeting up with friends, exercising, or indulging in one of your favo rite hobbies. Those much-needed breaks will help sustain you as you job hunt and allow you to have a more positive outlook on your overall search.Know how to negotiate.Lets say that you get a job offer for a position that you really want. Before you jump at the offer on the table, consider if its enough, or what you really need. Sometimes (but not always), women can have a hard time negotiating their job offers for fear of looking greedy or offending their prospective boss. But the salary you accept at one job can not only potentially reduce future salaries (since some employers will base a current salary off of previous ones), but it also contributes to the gender pay gap.So be a bossbabe when it comes time to negotiate your salary offer and ask for what you want (e.g., flexible work options, higher pay, better benefits, etc.). You might be (pleasantly) surprised at what your potential employer will agree toOwn your achievements. While you dont want to come across as a clichd used c ar salesman, its important to be able to sell yourself during a job interview. That means acknowledging your achievements and being able to speak about them in a professional (not pushy or bragging) manner. Use facts and figures to support your statements, and dont ever downplay your accomplishments. These are all selling points that can convince an employer that youre the job candidate to hire.Ready to start your search for a job where youre the boss?Browse a Full List of Open Flexible Jobs

8 things youre spending too much money on and how to stop

8 things youre spending too much money on and how to stop8 things youre spending too much money on - and how to stopSometimes financial stability takes a little bit of discipline. It can mean taking a look at all of our spending habits - big and small - and cutting out some non-essentials to be sure we can make it to our major financial goals. Theres a handful of things we all spend too much on, but a few painless tweaks can add up to major savings1. CoffeeCoffee tops the list because, with a bunch of alternatives to this habit, its one of the easiest cuts to make. If youre the gal who rolls out to the Bux for a daily 3 pm fix, that can really add up (Quick math - Our $5-a-day coffee habit can add up to $1,200 a year if were doing it every workday. At that amount, youre well into fancy handbag territory - and wouldnt we much rather be saving our money in that direction?)The FixWith a pretty minimal investment, it can feel like you have abarista right in your own kitchen. Pop yo ur morning brew in a reusable cute mug and you get bonus points for being a little greener. Make note of the when and why you end up goingout for big ticket coffee purchases. We all need an afternoon break, but sometimes just a quick walk around the block can be an equally refreshing (and free) pick-me-up.2. Gym membershipsGym memberships can be a solid investment if you truly are using them regularly and youve found a workout program that you stick with. If youre ready to shop around for a new gym, there are a few ways you can save, like joining in a group or taking advantage of student discounts. The FixThis is a different number for everyone, but do the math of dividing your monthly fee into the number of times you actually go to the gym to get your per workout expense. If this makes you faint, the way I do when I see the price of a Soul Cycle class, then consider taking your workout routinehome to the living roomor outdoors.3. Work lunchesTreat ourselves Fridays often turn into I - was-too-busy-to-meal-prep Mondays, leaving us stacking multiple work days back to back where were forced to buy our lunches. In many cities, this can easily be a $10 outlay, and doing it on the daily is an expensive habit to get into. The FixSave lunches out for a truly special occasion and schedule it with your work crew to make it something to look forward to. Resources abound forhealthy lunches we can make ourselves,so our wallets and our waistlines will thank us if we can reign this one in4. Late feesThis expense is worth getting under control ASAP because sneaky late fees not only rack up quickly, but also arentgreat for our credit. If youre routinely having this happen, it may be time torevisit your home budget, but if its just a lack of planning, there are a few quick fixes. The FixPut as many of your bills as possible on auto pay - either through the service provider or your own bank. If thats not possible, be diligent about setting payment reminders and alerts on your phon e a few days before anything is due. And did you know a lot of places will let you change your recurring bill due date? If, for example, its easier for you to pay a hefty bill at the end of the month versus the beginning, consider calling up the vendor and discussing your payment timing options.5. Brand name household itemsIn my dream home, my laundry room is filled with baskets of The Laundress and theres a boujee hand soap in every bathroom. In reality, a lot of times were spendingway too much on name brand household cleaners or basics where a store brand alternative would suffice. Many store-labeled products in this categoryperform about as wellas their famously named counterparts, so this is an easy way to trim expenses. The FixWe all know that big box purchases and online retailers often sell this stuff cheaper in bulk with recurring subscription orders. Make yourself more satisfied with these basics by decanting them into cuter bottles, and you wont even miss the fancier stuff. 6. Drinking outIf grabbing a cocktail with friends has become your regular bonding ritual, the tab can add up quickly About51% of uscop to heading to the bar at least once weekly - and were often tacking on a dinner out after that, making for a pricey evening. The FixPregame at home whenever possible and learnhow to stock your home bar. Oftentimes our plans involve dinner and drinks, and, lets face it, thats almost like ending up withtwodinner bills at the end of the night if were stopping off multiple places. Building out a cute home bar will make you excited to entertain at home and save some cash.7. Trendy clothesWe all want our wardrobes to feel fresh and current every season. This can, unfortunately, trick us into dropping a lot of money at fast fashion retailers and sometimes result in a closet full of clothes that either wont last or wont look quite right in another year. The FixLimiting ourselves to just a couple of trend pieces per season ensures were set up for a timeless w ardrobe with quality pieces. Quality classics can come at a variety of price points, so this doesnt necessarily mean you need to spend like crazy on clothes. It just means we all know that in a couple of years we wont need an entire closet of bell-sleeved sweaters.8. TransportationExtra transport expenses are slipping into our lives more quickly than ever Many of us have passed on having a car, but adding up ride shares and public transit can often equate to the fixed expense of owning a car.The FixFor most of us, grabbing an Uber when we could just designate a driver or even take a longer walk is a major culprit of overspending in this category. Committing to a primary mode of transportation - either your own car or public transit - will help shave off unnecessary expenses. (And if I were the responsible gal I really wanted to be, a chic travel umbrella would keep me from shelling out for a $10 cab every time it rains.)This article was originally published TheEverygirl.com.

I keep applying for jobs but never get any interviews. What am I doing wrong

I keep applying for jobs but never get any interviews. What am I doing wrong I keep applying for jobs but never get any interviews. What am I doing wrong?Posted May 2, 2013, by Jo Messer I keep applying for jobs but never get any interviews. What am I doing wrong? Vivek, 24, accounting graduate If youre sending out applications but never getting interviews, there are a number of areas you need to look at. The good news is that once youve applied some simple strategies to your job hunt, you can greatly increase your chances of getting shortlisted. The first thing you need to look at is whether your skills and experience are aligned to the jobs youre applying for, because theres no point if youre not suitably qualified. You need to carefully review both the advertisement and the position description, and analyse the key selection criteria to ensure that you are well matched to the role. As a general rule of thumb, you should meet at least 80 per cent of the criteria. If one of the criteria states that you must have at least 3 years experience in a similar position, then this is what they want. If they ask for you to be a Registered Division 1 Nurse, then this qualification is essential to the role. It is also important to note the differences in language used in a job ad for example, knowledge of as opposed to experienced in. Highlight the key words in the ad to identify what the must haves are to do the job. The next thing to look at is your cover letter. A cover letter is the first document an employer reads, and if it isnt tailored specifically to the role then youre wasting your time applying. A cover letter isnt just about why you want the job its about what you can offer and why that particular organisation should employ you. It needs to show that youve done your research about the position and the organisation, that you are confident in your ability to do the job, and that you share their vision and values. Your resume also needs to be tweaked t o reflect the requirements of the position. Review the terminology used in the job ad and match this with the language in your resume. You want to make it as easy as possible for the employer to see that you fit what they are looking for. An employer will receive a large number of applications so you need to put the most relevant information on the first page of your resume. If a job ad asks you to respond to key selection criteria then you MUST address them. If you dont, your application will not be shortlisted. Prepare a separate document titled Responses to Key Selection Criteria and address each criterion individually. It is essential that you highlight your experiences and skills in relation to the criterion, using specific examples that are as relevant as possible. Employers want to see that you can follow instructions. Theres no point saying that you have strong attention to detail if you cant pay attention to the details in a job ad. If you are asked to submit a two-page r esume, this is what you should send them. If you are asked for two referees, then it is not appropriate to say referees available on request. And of course, pay attention to spelling and make sure you get the recruiters name right Jo Messer is a Career Development Specialist who has many years of experience in supporting and guiding students and graduates of some of Australias most respected universities, as well as mature-aged clients, across all facets of their career. 3S0X1 Air Force Personnel Specialist

3S0X1 Air Force Personnel Specialist3S0X1 Air Force Personnel SpecialistA personnel specialist in the Air Force is like the human resources manager at a civilian company. They counsel airmen on their career goals, advising on things like promotions, training programs, and job specialties. Personnel specialists are also tasked with managing the Air Forces retention programs and advising airmen on benefits programs. Theyre responsible for making sure the Air Force is in einhaltung with personnel policies, directives, and procedures. Although the duties are similar to those of a civilian HR manager, there are many functions of this job which are uniquely military. Personnel specialists oversee a wide array of administrative functions such as duty status changes, leave programs, casualty assistance, and official documents such as letters of reprimand. In short, if a matter seems like a human resources function within the Air Force, chances are it falls under the duties of the personnel s pecialist. Duties and Responsibilities Personnel specialists in the Air Force are, in many ways, much like their counterparts in Army career counseling and Marine career planning. The Air Force personnel specialist acts as a kind of high school guidance counselor, only on a much larger scale. Air Force personnel specialists seem to combine the role of a counselor with that of basic administration, which is usually a separate career field in other branches of the service. Unlike career counselors in the Army, Navy, or Marines, who are often the only person in their career field stationed at a given unit, personnel specialists are more likely to work in large teams, sharing and dividing different specialized duties. Requirements Unlike career counselors in sister services, Air Force personnel specialists can join at entry-level provided they are high school graduates. The Enlisted Classification Manual adds that courses in English composition and speech are desirable. The Air Force recruiting site also suggests that, although not required, interest or skill in business, art, education, or logistics may indicate a good fit for the 3S0X1 career field. Candidates also need a qualifying score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) before enlisting, with a score of 45 on the verbal expression (VE) segment of the test. They need the ability to speak distinctly and should be able to type at least 25 words per minute to graduate to apprentice level after technical training. Training After eight and a half weeks of Air Force basic training, new airmen assigned to the personnel specialty move to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, where they attend the basic personnel course for about a month. While there, students are part of the 81st Training Group 404, which oversees aprogram for over 13 different career fields and where on a given day, more than 5,000 students attend classes in one of over 600 courses. Personnel specialists can combin e their training and experience with off-duty education to earn a degree in Human Resource Management from the Community College of the Air Force.

Handling the Weakness Question

Handling the Weakness QuestionHandling the Weakness QuestionWorkshop participants and coaching clients often ask how to handle the question, What are your weaknesses? After all, they know it will be asked at some point. This question has become such a staple for interviewers that it continues to spark discomfort, or even fear, in job hunters at all levels. Not surprisingly, the simple fact that the question is expected leads people to prepare responses that are more evasive than introspective. Unfortunately, that doesnt stop interviewers from asking the question.Consider the typical interview scenarioThe interviewer wants to learn the weaknesses of an applicant and asks, What are your weaknesses? The candidate attempts to dodge the question by providing a generic weakness that isnt necessarily a weakness at all.The interviewer learns nothing.Valuable interview time is wasted.Despite this, it is amazing how many otherwise smart interviewers still think its a good idea to pursue this lin e of questioning. Its even more amazing to hear how many people respond by describing themselves as perfectionists.A quick glance at the current state of our world is enough to realize that there arent nearly as many perfectionists as people who claim to be. Even if it happens to be true in your case, do not, under any circumstances, describe yourself as a perfectionist unless you are trying to turn the interviewer off completely. So, whats the solution? While it might seem odd to start with what interviewers can do to ask more thought-provoking questions, lets start there anyway. It actually reveals a more effective way for candidates to respond no matter how the question is phrased.A more effective approach The spirit of the weakness question is a good one in the sense that every one of us has room for improvement. Unfortunately, if we were all completely candid about the areas in which we need improvement, fruchtwein of us probably wouldnt have jobs. Theres something about sayin g a weakness out loud that makes it seem worse than it actually is.On the other hand, canned answers like perfectionism and chocolate dont do much to further the conversation either. For these reasons, I use a different approach. As an interviewer, rather than asking about weaknesses, I ask the following questionSomeone who doesnt know you well doesnt like you. What are five adjectives he or she might use to describe you? This question works for two primary reasons. First, it is a universal human phenomenon that there will always be people who dont know us well and, for whatever reason, dont particularly like us. Second, you cant fake your way through this question. As it happens, people are often so caught off-guard by the question that they find themselves compelled to answer candidly. For example, on two occasions, I had candidates one man and one woman describe themselves as mean-spirited. The more I probed, the more I realized it was probably an accurate self-assessment.Apart f rom this scenario, there are very few responses that would ultimately contribute to a candidate being eliminated because the five adjectives are only part of the answer. The only other noteworthy example would be the candidates who have so little self-awareness that they cant come up with a single adjective others might use to describe them. In most cases though, the real insight comes not from the five adjectives, but from the follow up questionNow, lets imagine you are on a team with a new person at the company. You notice theres some tension between the two of you. You also realize that this person would probably describe you as insert their list of 5 adjectives. How would you handle the situation? From a candidates perspective, the real objective is to provide a meaningful and believable area of improvement.Using this approach as a candidateWhen you hear the weakness question and you will answer the adjective and follow-up questions above instead. To show how this works, Ill d emonstrate the technique using a few of the adjectives people who dont know me well might use to describe me. The important point here is to take this one step further and say what you are doing to improve. For example, I would saySometimes people who dont know me particularly well get the wrong impression and see me as intense, angry and sometimes even aloof. Even though people who know me well would never use those words to describe me, I know I can come across that way at times. For this reason, I am taking steps to be seen as more kind and approachable like being the person who smiles and says hello to strangers. At that point, I would smile at the interviewer and sayAs someone who grew up in downtown Chicago, smiling at complete strangers isnt something I do naturally, but Im working on it.This approach works well for a few important reasons. First, every word of it is true. Second, it communicates honesty, self-awareness and a commitment to self-improvement. Better still, it o ften has the unintended consequence of creating a connection with the interviewer. On more than a few occasions, Ive had interviewers look at me with a somewhat surprised ausprgung and say, I have the exact same experience. People always tell me I look angry even when Im not. Another woman smiled and said, My husband is the same way. In each case, we connected in the moment as fellow human beings. That, by the way, is something that would be highly improbable the way most people approach the weakness question. Somehow, I cant picture an interviewer hearing about your perfectionist tendencies and excitedly exclaiming, Me tooKeep this in mind the next time you are asked about your weaknesses. Its a great way to be honest and compelling without damning yourself to a life of unemployment.

5 Best Tips for Moms to Start Job Searching

5 Best Tips for Moms to Start Job Searching 5 Best Tips for Moms to Start Job Searching Here are some of our best tips for moms to start job searching. Prioritize your job search. Easier said than done, we know. But unless you make finding a job a priority, doing so will fall at the bottom of your daily to-do list, somewhere after walking the dog at night and washing the dinner dishes. That’s why you have to treat looking for a job as if that is your job. Once the kids are in school or in day care, set time aside early in the day to launch your job hunt. Dedicate as much time as you can to it (an hour daily to start is good). By investing in your job search, you’ll feel good knowing that you’re essentially investing in yourself. Look for companies, not job listings. It seems like it would be easier to find pre-existing job listings as opposed to reaching out to companies first, right? Well, there are several reasons why it’s smart to find the company first, and the job second. By targeting organizations that you believe in, you’ll be much better equipped to handle those tough interview questions like, “What can you tell me about our organization? What improvements would you make to the company?” You may also discover that there are jobs available within the company that you’re qualified for, which can increase your chances of getting hired. offers a Guide to the Best Companies for Flexible Jobs, which can help you narrow down the process of finding a great organization to work for! Make it a team effort. As a family, you do pretty much everything together. That should also include your job hunt. Hold a family meeting and let your kids and spouse know that you are planning to return to the workforce. If you’ve been a stay-at-home mom since the kids were little, they may be a little hesitant to get behind your plans. So let them know about the positives of you returning to work, such as having more money in the household to do fun activities together on the weekends. Having your family be supportive of your back-to-work plans can make all the difference in a successful job search. Get social. You’re already plugged into the school’s PTO. Now it’s time to work those connections. Let your mom friends know that you’re looking for a job, but be sure to be specific. 5 Signs Youre Using Too Much Social Media in Your Job Search

5 Signs You’re Using Too Much Social Media in Your Job Search 5 Signs You’re Using Too Much Social Media in Your Job Search It’s a sobering statistic: an astounding 93 percent of hiring managers will review a job candidate’s social media profile before making a decision on whether to hire him or not. Armed with this info, savvy job seekers should ensure that their social media profiles are clean and professional to pass the hiring manager. But there is such a thing as using too much social media in your job search. While social media can be a fabulous tool when you’re job hunting, it needs to be used in moderation along with your arsenal of other job search tactics. Think you might be addicted to social media when it comes to job hunting? Below are five signs that you’re using too much social media in your job search. Love social media? Check out these signs that you might be using too much social media during your job search: 1. You’re compulsively checking Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. In your efforts to ramp up your job search- and get hired already- you’re spending more and more time on social media. Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram- they’ve become your job search besties. Thing is, you’re on the sites all the time because you’re afraid of missing a single post, pic, or tweet. In order to get the most out of your job search- and to stay sane- you should only go on social media as it relates to job searching a couple of times a day, max. 2. You’re on social media sites more than you’re applying for jobs. You want to find a job- now. So you actively monitor your social media channels for any signs of potential jobs, networking opportunities, or job leads. That’s all great and fine, but you might find that you’re spending more time  surfing your social media accounts than you are actually applying for positions. Make sure to balance your time better by applying for jobs as much as- or even more than- the amount of time you’re spending on social media. 3. You can’t stop tweaking your social media profiles. As an ardent job seeker, you want to put your best foot forward, both in a real life job interview and also online. As such, you find yourself incessantly playing with your social media profiles. You’re always updating your photos, making slight edits to your skills on LinkedIn, and obsessing over your last 140-character tweet on Twitter. But all that tweaking and picking can actually hurt your chances of getting hired, because it can potentially appear that you’re trying to hide something- even if you’re not. So update your profiles…just not too often as to arouse suspicion. 4. You’re incessantly asking everyone for online recommendations. You know how you feel when you get those generic LinkedIn emails from former coworkers asking you to give them a recommendation? Now imagine you’re the one churning out those requests. While it’s always a good idea to have referrals that attest to your stellar work ethic and superior work performance, you don’t need to have dozens of recommendations to improve your online presence. Pick out the top five or so that are the best, and file the rest. 5. You’re leaving too much of a social media trail. You follow companies that you’re interested in working for- and tweet out to them on a daily basis. You like their posts on Facebook, and you’ll even repost some of their pictures  on Instagram. In short, you’re doing everything you can to show companies that you’d love to work for them- everything, that is, except staying off of social media. The thing is, when you’re online too much (and leaving an obvious trail of likes, clicks, and tweets to prove it), a potential boss might get turned off and feel that you’re a.) on social media too much, and b.) being a little too eager, both of which can cast you in a negative light. While there’s nothing wrong with being in contact with companies you’d like to work for online, be strategic with your comments, likes, and such. Sometimes a little can go a long way. Having a social media strategy that works with the rest of your overall job search tactics is a great idea. Just make sure that you don’t get too social and let it overtake your job hunt! Readers, have you been guilty of using too much social media as it relates to your job search? Let us know what happened in the comments below!

HSBC CEO Walks Lesbian Couple Down the Aisle (Video) - The Muse

HSBC CEO Walks Lesbian Couple Down the Aisle (Video) - The Muse HSBC CEO Walks Lesbian Couple Down the Aisle (Video) Jennifer and Sam, a lesbian couple in Taiwan, had a rather unusual wedding ceremony. Instead of Jennifer’s father walking her down the aisle as tradition dictates, the CEO of her company did the honor. In spite of being a couple for over a decade, Jennifer’s parents have never acknowledged her relationship. They don’t accept Sam, and they don’t accept that their daughter is a lesbian. It’s little surprise then that they declined to attend the pair’s nuptials. The larger surprise, however, may be the show of support for Jennifer and Sam from HSBC, Jennifer’s employer. The country’s HSBC CEO, John Li, accompanied her down the aisle, telling her to “walk slowly and try not to be nervous.” Although Jennifer says she was initially reluctant to come out to her co-workers- working in a conservative banking environment added to her hesitation- the show of support and acceptance she experienced when she finally showed her true self was remarkable. If there’s one takeaway from this heartwarming tale, it’s that comfort and love come from many directions. A job isn’t just a job- or, at least, it doesn’t have to be if you find the right company and colleagues. Because wouldn’t it be great if the amount of time we spent at the office amounted to more than a paycheck? Screenshot courtesy of HSBC/YouTube.

Subject lines that will get your cold email noticed

Subject lines that will get your cold email noticed Subject lines that will get your cold email noticed When you’re job hunting, there are plenty of tips out there about how to get noticed- and most of them don’t involve submitting a standard  cover letter and Word .doc resume to a generic email  address. If you’ve never tried cold emailing before, the process can feel awkward or even invasive, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are our tips on how to reach out to strangers  respectfully, plus  some techniques for writing subject lines that will get you noticed in their inboxes. Follow Ladders on Flipboard! Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! What is cold emailing? Basically, it’s a way of reaching out to companies you love- that may not have listed job openings  at the moment- through direct contact.More often than not, contacting  the right person with a short, tailored email will serve you better than applying for jobs the old-fashioned way. To cold email, you do some mild to moderate internet  stalking of your favorite companies, find the name of someone you think will know what to do with your resume, then try reaching them by emailing a series of  likely addresses (firstname@companyx.com,  firstnamelastname@companyx.com,  etc). There are some great resources on how to get started with cold emailing  (we covered it  here  or try  here,  here, and  here) so we’ll skip straight to the rules  of  how  to write your actual message. Preparing to cold email Rule #1: Don’t Skip Steps Before cold emailing, gather your list of potential contacts  through LinkedIn or website  team pages. Next,  make sure to check  LinkedIn to see if anyone in your network is connected to the people  you’re trying to reach. It’s always better to reach out  through  a mutual acquaintance because it automatically establishes a level of trust. But sometimes reaching out to someone you don’t know can’t be helped so…just try it out. Rule #2: Tread Carefully Do your research. We’re talking all the research- on the company itself, the department that interests you, the role you’d like to fill, even the person you’re trying to email. If you want them to respond to your message, treat them with the deference they deserve by putting in the work. If we haven’t mentioned it enough already, the key to all cold emailing is: respect.Your email should be short and  tailored  to your contact- meaning if you’re not willing to write an original message for each person, you’re not ready to cold email. Drafting your email Rule #3: Keep It Short One-page cover letters serve  you fine when they’re actually a requirement of the job application, but when you’re cold-emailing, be mindful of the person’s time. Your email should be short and specifically tailored  to the company and your contact, meaning if you’re not willing to write an original message for each person, you’re not ready to cold email.By tailoring your emails, you’ll ensure that you come across as genuine, passionate, and a potential asset. Once you’ve written a summary of your standard cover letter, including how you  would specifically benefit the company at hand, you’re ready for the pesky final step: Writing the perfect subject line Rule #4: Make It Dynamic “Possible Job Opportunity?” = Not dynamic.“An inquiry”  = Nope. When you sit down to write your subject line, try these techniques: Don’t be afraid to get personal:  Have you ever heard that tip about using someone’s name regularly while speaking with them? It makes us all feel special for someone to remember and use our name in conversation. It means they’re paying attention and actively participating. The same applies to cold emailing. It’s always smart to try  working  the person’s name into the subject line. Use that research:  You looked into the company before cold emailing for a reason. Now use that knowledge. Reference a specific project they’ve recently completed or the name of the  department you’re interested in. These unique details will prove you’re not spam and that you care. Keep it short and weigh your words:  Skip the fillers, keep it short, and put the important stuff at the beginning. We all get bored. Make it easy for them. Provide value:  Why should they want to read your email, let alone interview or hire you? What makes you an asset? Get specific in your subject line. Examples If you  luck out and have a common connection:“Anna, Mark Johnson recommended  I reach out”  If you don’t know the contact at all, but found and read some of their published work:“Ms. Connor, I loved your LinkedIn article on networking”If you don’t have much to go on at all, offer value:“Social Media Manager with Non-Profit Expertise Interested In Helping  Your Team”  When all else fails, try a question:“Any advice for someone who loves the marketing work you’re doing at Company X?”This article originally appeared on Career Contessa. Married to Your Professional Network

Married to Your Professional Network Married to Your Professional Network Craig Bodkin, an IT director in Wisconsin, built a professional network the hard way before he realized he was already married to the best contact he needed. We all know the best professional connections are people who work for your ideal company already. But what we forget is that they may not be strangers. One thing job seekers overlook is the connections they already have.Craig Bodkin, a director of Information Technology, in Green Bay, Wis., initially overlooked an ideal insider: his wife.In June, Bodkin was laid off from his position as director of communications technology at Schneider National, a trucking company, in Green Bay. He immediately went to work looking for a job. He signed up for TechnologyLadder, worked with an outplacement firm to update his resume and considered relocating with his family. As he and his wife discussed potential life changes, he never thought to ask her if she knew about any opportunities within her company.“She had been working as a part-time onli ne instructor for ITT Educational Services (which owns and operates postsecondary schools providing technology degrees) for several years,” he said. “But I didn’t know anyone from ITT, and never paid much attention to what she did there,” he said, laughing. “We didn’t do the same job, so I didn’t consider her a networking resource.”While he wasn’t willing to move to California or the Northeast, he was willing to consider any available industry. “I’ve worked in several different areas, including software development, education; I’ve been doing this for over 24 years. So, there was no reason for me to limit myself.”He sorted through hundreds of IT director jobs on TechnologyLadder and ultimately applied to 70. “About four came back and said, ‘Let’s talk.’ Two of them were serious,” Bodkin recalled. One of the companies was the ITT Educational Services branch in Carmel, Ind., outside Indianapolis - about six hours from their Green Bay home.He sent h is resume to ITT at the end of September.Connecting the dotsAnticipating the Carmel, Ind., job, he and his wife asked college friends who lived in the Indianapolis area about the local housing market and the economy. “My friend mentioned that he knew someone who worked at the company (ITT),” Bodkin said. “So he had my resume forwarded to the hiring manager via his friend.”That’s when it occurred to his wife that she could use her connections within the company, too. Through her contacts at ITT, she had his resume forwarded to the same hiring manager. Those virtual connections put Bodkin at the head of the hiring manager’s list. “Things happened incredibly fast,” he said. ITT had created a new position for a director of IT operations, and “they were excited about this role and the opportunities it presented to the IT organization. They just seemed to have it together; they knew what they wanted and were going after it.”All of that appealed to Bodkin. “They were v ery decisive; every day the company was contacting me as things moved along.”He was especially excited about the fact that it was a new role within the company. “It gives you the opportunity to develop the position, the role and the company’s process, all those things I’m interested in. Plus, it’s in the education field, and I’d been in that area before.”By October 26, Bodkin was at his new desk at ITT, coordinating the support management and project management teams in the IT organization. He’s living in temporary housing while his wife and three of their four children, ages seven, 10 and 13, prepare to join him. The couple also has an older daughter, already living on her own at college.“(Moving is) part of my background,” he said. While they lived in Green Bay for the past seven years, before that, they had moved around quite a bit. “I was in the Navy, so we made some major moves in the past. We know what this is about, and we knew we had the ability to do it .“If I hadn’t been willing to move from Wisconsin, I wouldn’t have had as many jobs to apply to, and I don’t know when I would have had an interview,” he said.In the end it was Bodkin’s willingness to relocate and the connections he almost missed were the keys to winning the interview and the job.

Prenuptial Agreement FAQ - United States

Prenuptial Agreement FAQ - United States Prenuptial Agreement FAQ - United States GeneralShould I get a prenup? No one can tell you whether a prenuptial agreement is right for you and your situation. People can give you sound advice based on years of experience, but ultimately the decision is up to you and your future spouse. That said, you might want to consider a prenup if one or more of the following is true: You own or co-own a business or businesses. You may receive a large inheritance. You expect to see a large increase in income. One of you is much wealthier than the other. One of you plans to support the other financially through post-secondary education. You have or will have a license or degree in a lucrative profession. You own your own practice. You have valuable property, such as real estate, stocks, or savings. You have parents or other loved ones who need a secure financial future. What is discussed in a prenuptial agreement?Usually a prenuptial agreement will discuss the following topics: division and ownership of property; division and ownership of debts; spousal support; and inheritance of property. If I create a prenuptial agreement, will I avoid litigation in the event of a divorce?A successful prenup can help speed up litigation or possibly even avoid it altogether in the event of a divorce. However, there is no guarantee that a prenup will avoid litigation at divorce. Are there any limitations on who can create and sign a prenuptial agreement? No. Generally, any couple contemplating marriage can enter into a prenuptial agreement. What should I not include in a prenup?A prenuptial agreement cannot be used to determine issues regarding child custody, child visitation rights, or child support payments. Please do not include any provisions that deal with such, as the courts will always make a decision based on the best interests of the child(ren) at the time of divorce. You should also avoid including any provisions that do not deal with property or finances. For example, you should avoid including a clause stating that your spouse must do the laundry twice a week. These types of demands not binding in court. If you wish to list personal matters, such as the division of chores, rules for raising children, etc., you should do so in a separate agreement (with the knowledge that such an agreement is not legally binding) so as not to invalidate your prenuptial agreement. What is the difference between a prenuptial agreement and a cohabitation agreement?A prenuptial agreement is an agreement specifically for couples who intend to get married while a cohabitation agreement is for couples (either heterosexual or same-sex) who intend to live together. When should we sign our prenuptial agreement? You should sign your prenuptial agreement well in advance of your marriage ceremony (its recommended not less than 30 days before the wedding). Should the agreement later be challenged, the court will be less likely to question whether one of the parties entered into the agreement under duress, coercion, or undue influence. Signing the document in advance ensures that both parties have had sufficient time to consider the agreement before getting married. Should all finances be disclosed prior to entering a prenuptial agreement?Yes, it is essential that each party discloses his/her finances to the other (including all income, assets and debts). The prenuptial agreement can be challenged in court if it later revealed that one of the parties did not disclose or hid assets at the time the agreement was created. In the interests of full disclosure, it is smart practice to attach financial statements detailing the financial situation of each party. What requirements must be met for a prenuptial agreement to be held valid and legally enforceable?Usually, for a prenuptial agreement to be held valid and enforceable by a court it must comply with the following requirements: The agreement must be in writing, signed and witnessed. Both parties must have provided complete disclosure of all assets liabilities. If parties have legal representation, each party must retain their own lawyer to ensure they receive independent legal advice. There cannot be any evidence of duress, coercion, or undue influence. Provisions between the parties must be legally permissible. Party InformationWhat is a Referred Name?A referred name is a name that a party will be referred to as throughout the agreement. In most cases, the referred name will be the partys given name (i.e. Alexander) or a shortened version (i.e. Alex). What does independent legal advice mean?Independent legal advice refers to each party having a different lawyer explain to them the terms of the agreement and advising them of what is in their best interests. While its not usually necessary for parties to a prenuptial agreement to have independent lawyers, it can act as an additional safeguard. Courts will be more willing to uphold the terms of a prenuptial agreement if it is clear that both parties had their own lawyer and understood the agreement they were entering. PropertyWhat is property?Property is anything that is owned. Property is often divided into two types: real property which is any interest in land or real estate and personal property (sometimes referred to as personalty) which includes everything else. Savings accounts, stocks and bonds, real estate, vehicles, valuable antiques these are all examples of property. How can I list property? There are two ways to list both Separate Property and Shared Property: Select Yes, as specified below. This option allows you to list up to ten items of property per party. This option is convenient if you have not already created a list of property and each party has 10 or fewer items to claim. Select Yes, as specified in an attached list and attach a list of property to your prenuptial agreement. This option is best if you have already created a detailed list of property or if a party has more than 10 items to claim. How should I list property? When listing an item of property, your goal should be to list enough information about the item so that there is no doubt as to which item you are describing. As a general rule, the more information you provide about an item of property, the easier it will be to identify in the future. The following are suggestions for listing different types of property. Vehicles Year, Make, Model, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). VIN is optional, but recommended. Example: 2006 Ford F-150 Extended Cab, 111 Real Estate Property Type of property, address (Street Address, City, State, ZIP). Example: Townhouse, 111 Pine Street, Los Angeles, California, 11111 Accounts, Funds, etc. Type of account, institution, account number. Example: Savings Account, XYZ Bank, 111 Possessions List enough information so that there will be no questions as to which item you are describing. When listing a collection, name at least the most important items in the collection. If you have an art collection with over 100 pieces, it might be difficult and/or impractical to list them all. However, you should include the description of all pieces that are particularly valuable or meaningful to you. Examples: Diamond earrings from ABC Jewelers, 0.5 ct. Bedroom furniture, including: king sized bed, king sized mattress, two night tables, and two lamps. Art collection, including: Sunset, original painting by Artist X; Apples, print by Artist Y; all other paintings, prints, and sculptures. How should I title my lists? You should title each list as a schedule. For instance, if your first list is a description of all your assets, you may want to title the list as Schedule A and underneath this heading provide the subheading Summary of Assets. What is Separate Property?Separate property is property that will not be divided between the parties in the event of a breakup. In other words, there will be no question as to the legal ownership of the property or whether the other party has any entitlement to it. What is Shared Property?Shared property is property that the two parties have either purchased together or have agreed to consider as belonging to both parties. How should Shared Property be assessed in the event of a separation? There are many different ways that Shared Property can be assessed in the event of a separation. LawDepots prenuptial agreement allows you to select the two most common ways of assessing Shared Property or create your own. The two common answers you can select are Each party will own 50% of the property and Ownership will be based on the financial contribution of each party. To create your own clause, select Other and enter your preferred method for assessing Shared Property in a complete sentence or paragraph. The following is an example of the kind of clause you could create: Alex will own 80% of the art collection. Mary will own for 20% of the art collection. Each party will own 50% of all other Shared Property. What is a Transfer of Property?A transfer of property occurs when one party gives or sells ownership of a piece of property to another party. LawDepots prenuptial agreement includes an optional clause stating that the transfer of present or future property between the two parties must be evidenced in writing. If this clause was selected and Alex wanted to give ownership of his vehicle to Mary, the two would need a written contract as evidence of the transaction. Although this method requires more paperwork, it does provide more protection, as it helps to establish changes in the ownership of property between the parties. DebtsWhat are Debts?Debts are typically obligations to pay money. How can I list Debts? There are two ways to list both Separate Debts and Shared Debts: Select Yes, as specified below. This option allows you to list up to ten items of debt per party. This option is convenient if you have not already created a list of debt and each party has 10 or fewer items to claim. Select Yes, as specified in an attached list and attach a list of debts to your prenuptial agreement. This option is best if you have already created a detailed list of debts or if a party has more than 10 items to claim. How should I title my lists? You should title each list as a schedule. For instance, if your first list is a description of all your debts, you may want to title the list as Schedule A and underneath this heading provide the subheading Summary of Debts. What are Separate Debts?Separate debts are debts that fall upon the responsibility of one party and thus are not divided in the event of a breakup. Responsibility for the payment of a separate debt will be solely on the party who has either incurred the debt or agreed to take responsibility for the debt. What are Shared Debts?Shared Debts are debts that both parties are responsible for. Shared Debts will be divided in the event of a breakup. How should Shared Debts be assessed in the event of a separation? There are many different ways that Shared Debts can be assessed in the event of a breakup. LawDepots prenuptial agreement allows you to select the two most common ways of assessing debts or create your own. The two common answers you can select are Each party will be responsible for 50% of the debt and Responsibility will be based on the financial contribution of each party. To create your own clause, select Other and enter your preferred method for assessing debt in a complete sentence or paragraph. The following is an example of the kind of clause you could create: Alex will be responsible for 75% of all Shared Debts related to renovation costs. Mary will be responsible for 25% of all Shared Debts related to renovation costs. Each party will be responsible for 50% of all Shared Debts that are not related to renovation costs. ChildrenWhat are Dependent Children?Dependent children are natural or adopted children that still rely on their parent(s) for financial support. SupportCan a party be entitled to more than one type of support?Yes, a party can be entitled to more than one type of support. For example, your prenup could dictate that, in the event of a divorce, your future spouse will receive a lump sum payment as well as fixed monthly payments. What is a Lump Sum Payment?A lump sum payment is a one-time payment of money, as opposed to a series of recurring payments. Will the details of the Support section be upheld? Some states do not allow prenups to dictate what support is given in the event of a separation or divorce. If you are unsure of the laws of your state regarding this manner, please contact a local lawyer. Also note that a judge can revoke a prenuptial agreement if its terms will leave one party destitute or if it is otherwise considered one-sided or unfair, even if both parties agreed to the terms. Additional ClausesWhat are Additional Clauses? The Additional Clauses feature allows you to add your own clauses to cover any issues that LawDepots standard prenuptial agreement does not cover. When writing your own clause, be clear and concise, and write it in a complete sentence or paragraph. Avoid creating clauses that do not deal with property or finances. For example, you should avoid including a clause stating that your spouse must do the laundry twice a week. Not only are these types of demands not binding in court, they might even cause a judge to revoke the entire agreement. OtherWhich State do I list for Governing Law?For the Governing Law, you should list the state that you primarily reside in or the state that you plan to primarily reside in for the majority of the marriage, regardless of where the wedding is being held. Signing Details Are witnesses required?Witness requirements vary from state to state. For example, Georgia requires that you sign your prenup in front of two witnesses. If you are unsure of the legal requirements in your state, it is best to select two witnesses. Having more witnesses than required will not affect the validity of the contract. What is an Affidavit of Execution? An Affidavit of execution is a sworn statement by a witness to the signing of a document in which the witness confirms that the proper execution of that document occurred. What is a Notary Public?A Notary Public is a state-appointed official who is authorized to authenticate certain legal documents, such as declarations, acknowledgments, deeds, mortgages, and other contracts. What is a Certificate of Independent Legal Advice?A certificate of Independent Legal Advice is a document that states that a party has received legal advice on a proposed matter, from an independent lawyer who is not associated with the other party. In order for the prenupital agreement to be enforceable, some states require that both parties obtain independent legal advice and that certificates of independent legal advice be completed. For example, California Family Code section 1612(c) provides that spousal support waivers absolutely require that the party waiving the right was represented by independent legal counsel at the time the agreement was entered into. So if a lawyer has not advised the party and signed off on the prenuptial agreement (completed the certificate of independent legal advice), the waiver is not enforceable. Can I restrict or waive child support in a prenuptial agreement?Generally, you can not adversely affect or waive any rights of a child to support in a prenuptial agreement. The parties can set their intentions in the prenuptial agreement which the courts can consider, but they are not bound by such provisions as the needs of the children are paramount. Do I need to file my prenuptial agreement anywhere? No, you do not need to file your prenuptial agreement anywhere. Just make sure that you keep a signed copy or copies in a safe, secure place.
